Digital Collections

FRANKLIN is a virtual research room and digital repository that provides free and open access to the digitized collections of the Roosevelt Library. It hosts over 800,000 pages of archival documents and 2,500 historical photographs, along with many detailed descriptions of archival collections not yet digitized.

Documents

The Franklin D. Roosevelt Library maintains over 17 million pages of documents in its archives. Among these materials are the personal papers of Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt, as well as those of various individuals and organizations associated with the Roosevelts.

Photographs

Still picture holdings range in date from 1870 to the present, with approximately 130,000 items. About 2,500 public domain photos are now available online through the FRANKLIN digital repository, the National Archives Catalog, and Flickr.

Audio and Film

Audio and motion picture holdings of the archives include recordings of or about Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt, the New Deal, and World War II. These include the famous Fireside Chats, government productions, commercial radio broadcasts, home movie footage, and commercial film and television productions.

Online Book Catalog

Search the Library's non-circulating and rare book collection, including 22,000 volumes donated by FDR from his private collection. Books are available for research on site in the Library's research room.

The archives staff provides general reference service to help enable access to all archival holdings, and provides reproductions upon request. Please contact us for information about documents, photographs, audio-visual materials, books and printed materials.

Research Grants

The Roosevelt Institute – the Roosevelt Library’s non-profit partner – supports a program of small grants-in-aid, not to exceed $2,500, in support of research on the “Roosevelt years” or clearly related subjects.
