During the Great Depression FDR’s New Deal created a series of programs designed to put millions of unemployed people to work. One of his favorites was the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), which built recreational trails and facilities, many still in use today.
Why not explore a nature trail near you?
Hiking or walking a trail is a great way to get outside and into nature for fresh air, exercise, and fun. It’s even more fun when you take along family and friends!
- Plan to visit a hiking trail in your area.
- What trails are available near you?
- When were they built? By whom?
- What is the history of the land they are on?
- What natural or man-made features can you see from the trail?
- Set a goal of walking X miles of trails this summer.
