Summer Reading - Set a Goal

Both President and Mrs. Roosevelt loved to read. By the time of his death on April 12, 1945, FDR had amassed a personal book collection containing about 23,000 books! Over the course of her life Mrs. Roosevelt wrote about two dozen books and thousands of articles and essays that were read by millions around the world.

Why not set a goal of reading 3-6 books this summer?
Summer is a great time for reading, it’s fun, it’s cool, and unlike in school, YOU get to pick what you read. So why not set a goal to read 3-6 books, or more, this summer?

  • What kinds of books would you put on your summer reading list?
  • Will you read stand alone books or books in a series?
  • Do you prefer fiction or nonfiction?
  • How many books will you read this summer?
  • Is there a book club at your local library or in your community that you could join to help you stay focused?

The Roosevelt Presidential Library’s Archives department has continued to collect books with Roosevelt-era topics, themes, and collections. These books are often used as secondary sources for researchers to gain background and insight before they begin to use the Library’s 17 million pages of primary sources. Today, along with FDR’s original 23,000 books, we have an additional 30,000.

FDR especially loved books about local and naval history. He also liked cheesy paperback mystery books.  He had been reading one of these books on the night before he died. The book’s title was_________.

  1. See You in The Morning: Maybe…
  2. The Mystery of Fala Hill
  3. Lights Out for Terriers
  4. The Punch and Judy Murders
